Why You Should Stop Wasting Money On Marketing

THE DIGITAL MARKETING REVOLUTION?

It’s no secret that the business world has gone crazy over social media. Currently one-third of the world is on social media, and 94% of buying decisions are influenced by social media (Socialnomics) so it’s obvious to scale up your business all you just need to do is pour more money into marketing, its so simple right? Well this blog is designed to give you a really quick insight into marketing and social media from my prospective – especially if you’re thinking about increasing your ad spend! My aim from this blog is to get you to re-look your business structure and brand, and to hopefully prevent you from burning your money on marketing.

My names is Yusef and during 2018 I worked with a rehabilitation charity and assisted in setting up a successful social enterprise and project managed the enterprise with a £40,000 budget. The project was so successful that it almost broke even in year 1, it was planned out in terms of operations and systems so well, that a franchise is already on the way. Also as a hobby, I was working and creating a marketing plan with an independent music artist that went viral and assisted him in achieved 1million + streams in his first year, all off organic marketing – resulting in myself starting up a innovative marketing company. Now I currently work for an amazing entrepreneur and author called Daniel Priestley who gave me the opportunity to work inside his company and learn from the ground up. Daniel develops entrepreneurs to stand up and scale out and has worked directly with 3,500+ businesses with his business accelerator company called Dent, helping them to scale their business exponentially.

Here’s a few questions I want you to think about – Has social media and digital marketing suddenly become the most important thing to ensure your business is successful? Are your competitors running the industry and spending large amounts on marketing and sweeping up all your potential customer? Is this forcing you to spend money on marketing above your means when you truly don’t know what you’re even doing? Marketing is the future right? well, actually its the past.

The truth is marketing isn’t a new phenomenon, it has actually been around since the dawn of businesses. Marketing really took off the same day that the first logo was created – let me take you all the way back to an era where there was no social media, and no, i’m not talking about 10 years ago. Lets vision a time when the first logo’s were created in the form of a flag. We’re going to go back to the first ‘war flags’ and one of the most powerful war flags I want to talk about was the ‘rising sun flag’ (旭日 Kyokujitsu-ki) which was originally used by feudal warlords in Japan as early as 1603, but really originates way back in the 7th century!

downloadNow, they didn’t continuously allocate loads of their wealth into ‘marketing’ to create massive banners that can be seen from a mile away, along with branding all their horses and soldiers armour with the ‘Rising Sun Flag’ logo to increase revenue and get more leads. It was really more to do with the whole ethos and meaning behind the flag, what was associated with it, what ‘feeling’ would a enemy have when they saw that iconic flag approaching, what ‘key people of influence’ sat at the top of the command that people would associate the flag with, do you see where i’m going with this?

Well, lets break it down from a 2019 prospective. They wouldn’t have been able to create such a massive ‘brand’ that supported tremendous growth without having the behind the scenes business operations, strategies and finances in place first. Behind the Rising Sun Flag was a whole profitable business that supported everything from from cities, cooks, mercenaries, leaders, war lords, trainers, cleaners and many more. In other words they had the Key Person of Influence at the top, the Operations Manager, Marketing Expert, Salesman, Admin Manager and maybe an apprentice or two. We know for a fact they had to of had all the best and efficient strategies in place to deal with the growth of the army along with being able to deal with the benefits of conquering a city.

The enemies, or even other countries looking on from a distance knew that flag meant a solid army was approaching and they would have known exactly what that flag stood for and the history behind the flag in terms of war victories/atrocities – due to what? social… media? Well not quite, actually it was word of mouth and authors publishing them in their high sought after material, and mainly because of the massive results that came with that brand. So I can almost guarantee that the ‘Rising Sun Flag’ used all sorts of modern day marketing tactics from guerrilla marketing, to public speaking, social influencers and maybe even… Google Ads Words. The ‘Rising Sun Flag’ grew so much as a brand that it was adopted as the war flag of the Imperial Japanese Army, and on October 7, 1889, it was adopted as the naval ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy. It was so effective that it is still used in Japan as a symbol of tradition and good fortune, and is incorporated into commercial products and advertisements up to this day!

Screen Shot 2019-04-19 at 8.53.16 PM.pngNow, lets look at a modern day brand, Coca-Cola. We all know this brand right and where they are today? Well it was created by a pharmacist named John Pemberton and he started of tiny, selling only 9 glasses a day in the first year. So quick question, do you think John decided to put all his money into marketing to grow his business, he must of right?

Well not quite, Atlanta businessman Griggs Candler bought the right to Coca-Cola off Pemberton for a whopping total of £1,500. Straight away Griggs Candler started working on the structure of the business from operations, sales, marketing and company ethos. My point is, Coco-Cola without the ‘business brains and backbone’ behind it probably wouldn’t have gone very far. Coco-Cola is now worth $71.3 Billion and they spend $4 Billion a year on Marketing. Why? Because they know they can support the growth, they own the whole distribution chain and can get their Coco-Cola drinks to the most remote of towns. So, if they spend $4 Billion a year to reach new customers, guess what, they know they can deal with the influx of leads and can convert them to sales as easily as the customer walking into their local shop in one of the world’s poorest towns and buying the Coca-Cola drink for the first time.

So my moral of the story is don’t run before you can walk. Social media and marketing isn’t going anywhere – make sure you get the business structure and brand ethos right first to ensure you can support the growth of the business that the marketing budget will ultimately provide. I want you to think of your brand like the ‘Rising Sun Flag’ or even Coca-Cola. First thing is sort out the product or service you provide and make it your mission to ensure your product or service it soo fantastic that people will organically spread the news of your brand through word of mouth, and so that authors will find an incentive to write about it in their highly sort after material.

If you have no-one raving about your product or service yet then you’re not ready to put a penny into marketing. If you have everything in place and people are raving about your brand organically then it makes the marketers job easy, they can keep the message and ethos of your brand consistent and they are confident that you have a sales process and strategy in place to deal with the influx of leads. Think about it, where do your most ‘warm leads’ come from? I can guarantee it’s either through word of mouth, or they saw a review or blog by a respected author that they trust.

Find out how influential you are in your industry today, and find out if you’re ready to take your business further….

Good Luck,

Yusef.

My name is Yusef and I currently run a small but innovative marketing business, my approach is to assist entrepreneurs to utilise organic means of marketing to reach tremendous results. I have experience in this field by working with a music artist and good friend of mine to utilise organic marketing in the highly competitive music industry to receive ROI’s of around 400% profit on every song/video he has released to date, check it out here. I also work for an amazing entrepreneur called Daniel Priestley at a company called Dent – they develop entrepreneurs to stand out and scale up through world class business accelerators. I work within the partnership and enrolments team and I’m fortunate to spend most of my day talking to entrepreneurs, finding out their typical struggles in business, how they heard of us originally and what their experience has been like with Dent so far.

By speaking to hundred of entrepreneurs working for Dent and by reading thousands of comments by ‘fans’ on YouTube videos and Instagram pages, I have made it my mission to understand how the typical customer thinks and to understand what prompted them to click on a video or what enticed them to click on a FaceBook Ad. This is where I built up the knowledge to come up with this blog and articulate and share with you my top 5 tips for utilising organic marketing to it’s full potential.

1) Create An Incentive For Your Customers To Market For You!

People are always looking for a new creative picture that they can post on their social platforms to wow their friends with – and there’s only so much you can do with a picture of a Starbucks coffee cup with your name on it. The most successful marketers understand this and are always creating products or coming up with ideas that creative an incentive for the customers to post on their page and actually do the marketing for them. For example we’ve all heard, or should I say seen the ‘Movember’ campaign where they challenged the public to shave their beard but keep a crazy moustache then upload a picture to their social media pages and hashtag ‘Movember’. What makes a campaign like this so brilliant is the person who posted the picture would have to explain to their friends and family that they’re not really having a midlife crisis but actually supporting an important #Movember campaign, in other words they got the participants to do the marketing and business pitching on their behalf! This was a tremendously successful campaign due to thousands of people partaking, spreading the word and raising vital awareness – resulting in #Movember becoming a viral campaign.

2) Make All Content Unique, Funny Or Controversial.

It’s no secret people love a talking point, and in this day and age there’s no such thing as bad publicity. I want you to take a moment and think about the most controversial person of all time. Who did you come up with? Was it by any chance Princess Diana, Tony Blair or Donald Trump? Well one thing they all have in common is – they still have supporters and probably were never struggling for cash. The sad truth is controversy pays and any good marketer in this day and age understands this and uses it to their advantage. Unique and funny campaigns are also a sure thing in the marketing world, as this give popular platforms and the public an incentive to post the content on their platforms or share with their friends- resulting in free publicity

The human brain goes into ‘monkey mode’ when browsing social media or reading the daily newspaper, your brain is relaxed and seeking entertainment and literally latches onto any sort of unique, funny or controversial piece of content. I challenge you to observe the viral content posted online over the next few days (especially the newspaper) and try and figure out what category it falls into – unique, funny or controversial. Marketers have known this for years and design all news to keep readers locked in and make them feel like they’re receiving important news (some of it could be), but really it’s just monkey brain food and doesn’t impact the readers life in any tangible way but really designed to make a reader feel – emotion.

3) Read Your Comments!

Yes, you heard that right. So many business owners focus soo much time and energy on finalising sales, delivering a product or service or managing teams that they forget the most important part of their business – finding out why the customer who didn’t buy, didn’t buy – they usually leave a clue in the comments section embedded with a few hurtful words. And I bet you’re thinking something along the lines of ‘ my business is doing pretty well without reading peoples comments and I don’t see that as time well spent’ – I wan’t to be the one to tell you that the biggest companies in the world were started by entrepreneurs who spent countless hours reading their comments and made it their priority to understand the customers views and opinions. Don’t believe me? well –

  • Amazon didn’t ruin retail – Poor customer service and experience did
  • Air BnB didn’t ruin the hotel industry – Expensive costs and limited bookings did
  • Netflix didn’t kill blockbuster – Ridiculous late fees did
  • Apple didn’t kill the music industry – Having to buy full length albums did
  • Uber didn’t kill the taxi business – Limited access and fare control did

The solution to staying ahead of your competitors in your industry doesn’t lie within a 3 hour management meeting that costs you thousands to conduct and results in you increasing your marketing budget by 200% for the 4th time in a row- it actually comes from the frustrationthat @Lexii_365 experienced as a customer of your business and honestly posted under your latest Twitter post. I have notice Daniel Priestley and the team are always asking their clients for feedback and we discuss any customer complaints at team meeting every single week without fail, they understand it is the key to keeping current or potential customers happy and which is why I believe Dent will be the industry leaders for the years to come.

I now challenge you to spend an hour of your day reading comments about your business, or if you want to be really clever, your competitors – start to get in touch with your customers feelings, needs and wants and really begin to understand them. Also, speak to your customer service department and ask them what is consistently coming up as ‘negative feedback’ amongst your clients, I then want you to take that insight and make that the priority topicfor your next management meeting.

4) Aim To Go Viral With Every Piece Of Content.

Technology is the future of all businesses in every industry and social media is the future for marketing, this is something I believe in and if you don’t see this coming then chances are you’re a few years behind the rest of your respected industry. I want to share with you a quote I saw that has changed my prospective of social media altogether and has spurred me to create content relentlessly.

You are one piece of content away from changing your life

I want you to take a moment and try to think of a particular piece of content you put out in the past that was the starting domino or a major factor in taking either you or your business to the next level, this could be a book, an interview or just a Instagram post.

I now want you now to complete a little challenge – take the 3 tips I shared with you above and think about your next piece of content you want to share with the world in the hopes of going viral that will ultimately promote your business. Spend about 5 minutes planning this amazing piece of content that will change your life again. This content needs to aim to:

  • Win over the people who left a ‘negative’ feedback in your comments. for example if they commented that your custom jumpers were quite cheap so they just assumed it was low quality, then use wording such as ‘Luxury’ or ‘High Quality’.
  • Create something either funny, unique or controversial.
  • Most importantly it must give your customers or anyone online an incentive to re-post or take a picture with your brand embedded. (similar to Movember) or even that famous Starbucks coffee cup.

5) Champion Your Customers!

Great, now you understand your customers, what makes them buy your product, what puts them off your product/industry, what prompts them to post your content/brand on their personal social pages and you have even designed an amazing piece of content that could potentially go viral.

Now I want you to take a moment and think about who your best clients are and where they have came from, or should I say what clients were the easiest to convert into a sale? Wait. Let me guess – was it a referral? Well turns out people tend to trust their friends that they’ve know for the last 10 years over an annoying advertisement that followed them from YouTube to FaceBook for the last 10 years. This is why giving people an incentive to post your brand/product on their social page will have the best ROI and in certain circumstance it costs you absolutely nothing! so its just ‘R’ for Return, pure profit – in other words it didn’t cost you anything from the marketing budget! This is something that the industry will understand overtime but probably after they’ve wasted thousands of pounds on marketing – despite year after year of not getting the same results that they achieved at the start of their paid ads journey, unfortunately ads will just get more expensive.

5 tips to surviving your 9-5 job

Becoming a bigger fish is good but only requires more oil for you to get fried. Life in the workplace can be harsh, brutal and deflating but still doesn’t prevent anyone of us going into work the following morning… why? Because we need to get paid of course.

Jealousy, deception and fake integrity are all traits that are widely expressed within many workplaces. Some may believe that it is just the nature of the person, I believe this is employees only adapting to the nature of their work environment. Humans are natural adapters, if jobs gave promotions based on someone’s ‘funny jokes’ or ‘amazing work from home’, then everyone will attempt to do so to get a promotion. So my theory is, if everyone is showing bad traits while still being highly ambitious in the corporate world, then they are merely trying to adapt and learning from their environment on how to reach the epitome of success.

Here are my 5 tips to surviving the 9-5 workplace:

1) Never take things personally

“Never take things personally from someone that doesn’t know you personally.”

Ever wonder why we get so mad at close friends and families insults towards us? Because we actually give a sh*t. I understand some of you may be mothers and fathers or just good people and genuinely have a kind heart, but please understand many people will use this against you whether you know it or not. Never take things personally in the work place because at the end of the day you will be the only one stressing and dwelling on the negative. My advice is to always try and be positive and don’t take it personally when it comes to negativity or criticism.

This is an amazing trait to have because you will begin to understand why people are criticising you or being mean. If you eliminate the factor of being upset or angry, you will subconsciously begin to view every negative comment from a different prospective allowing yourself to be more visual and understanding giving yourself potentially for improvement as a person mentally.

2) If speaking is made of Silver then silence is made

People always want information out of someone it’s in our human nature, it’s why we are always so nosey well we just can’t help it. In the workplace someone will always be trying to get information out of you no matter what field you are in, the key is to never let off more than you need to. Revealing your next steps or plans is equivalent to showing your cards in poker, I could go really deep into this… but to cut things short, bare in mind some people are playing chess in the workplace and it’s no secret, don’t be a bad chess player and reveal your next move.

“Actions speak louder than words it’s well known, so always remember silence is gold.”

3) consistency is key

consistency is the key to mastering any art or field and it’s no secret. I’ve heard that to master a art you need to practice it for 10 years, well I’ve also spoke to business men that tell me they have been doing the same thing for 15 years now and still learn new things every day! Wake up and set your goals, sit down and write your weekly objectives and then go to bed at night dreaming your vision.

Whilst I was growing up I’ve witnessed some amazing young footballers and there was always that one kid in class that was referred to as the ‘best in the year’. As the years went on that kid would usually get content or get sucked into a different lifestyle and completely neglect football, and actually the 2/3rd best footballer in the year would actually make it pro, because behind the scenes every day they would go and practice football and the key was consistency, this is a true story and I tell my little brothers all the time to advise them that if you really want to be/do something you need to fully commit.

4) Embrace failure

“Every failure adds a layer to your mental strength”

Within the workplace there is always pressure to never make mistakes at any costs or you will perceived as a ‘liability’ or a ‘failure’. Well young professionals such as interns or apprentices are expected to make mistakes which kind of makes the boss/manger become slightly lenient more on them, but a professional with 5 years of experience is expected to know it all, this is a harsh reality we all have to face.

Failures are inevitable and a part of life, in the animal kingdom if a tiger misses a kill they will not eat, which is a failure, but with their natural instinct they will see it as a lesson and next time they will be stealthier, faster and more observant to ensure they get it right. Us as humans need to adapt to failures and always try and find a positive in the situation and then actually need to own it and embrace it.

Little tip: As a IT assistant when I never knew how to do something I would tell a client I forgot my notes, then run back to my bestfriend called Google and find out exactly how to fix the issue, then return to the client and fix the issue with them none the wiser that I had no clue how to do it before hand, maintaining tThis main point is never admit you don’t know how to do something before seeking help or advice.

5) Always have a vision

Having a vision is so important in a workplace and you should even incorporate having a vision into your daily life, I don’t have dreams, I have goals, but I will admit my goals start of as visions. If you have a vision to become a manager for example, you will subconsciously implant it into your mind and then when you get tested with nonsense in your current job role you will automatically see your vision of yourself being a manager and start to think how you would approach the issue, ultimately then sucking it up and understanding you need to be patient, and that you actually have a bigger goal to aim for and this is just a obstacle you need overcome to actually get there.

There are more reasons to have a vision but the main one is so that you actually have a purpose in life or a main aim. if you don’t have a vision then you will just be living day to day, paycheck to paycheck not really seeing your next stage of progression. Please set yourself targets and goals and watch how they work out eventually, I can’t explain how they will happen but if you believe it will happen then trust me, it will happen, if not then MAKE IT HAPPEN!
