My name is Yusef and I currently run a small but innovative marketing business, my approach is to assist entrepreneurs to utilise organic means of marketing to reach tremendous results. I have experience in this field by working with a music artist and good friend of mine to utilise organic marketing in the highly competitive music industry to receive ROI’s of around 400% profit on every song/video he has released to date, check it out here. I also work for an amazing entrepreneur called Daniel Priestley at a company called Dent – they develop entrepreneurs to stand out and scale up through world class business accelerators. I work within the partnership and enrolments team and I’m fortunate to spend most of my day talking to entrepreneurs, finding out their typical struggles in business, how they heard of us originally and what their experience has been like with Dent so far.

By speaking to hundred of entrepreneurs working for Dent and by reading thousands of comments by ‘fans’ on YouTube videos and Instagram pages, I have made it my mission to understand how the typical customer thinks and to understand what prompted them to click on a video or what enticed them to click on a FaceBook Ad. This is where I built up the knowledge to come up with this blog and articulate and share with you my top 5 tips for utilising organic marketing to it’s full potential.

1) Create An Incentive For Your Customers To Market For You!

People are always looking for a new creative picture that they can post on their social platforms to wow their friends with – and there’s only so much you can do with a picture of a Starbucks coffee cup with your name on it. The most successful marketers understand this and are always creating products or coming up with ideas that creative an incentive for the customers to post on their page and actually do the marketing for them. For example we’ve all heard, or should I say seen the ‘Movember’ campaign where they challenged the public to shave their beard but keep a crazy moustache then upload a picture to their social media pages and hashtag ‘Movember’. What makes a campaign like this so brilliant is the person who posted the picture would have to explain to their friends and family that they’re not really having a midlife crisis but actually supporting an important #Movember campaign, in other words they got the participants to do the marketing and business pitching on their behalf! This was a tremendously successful campaign due to thousands of people partaking, spreading the word and raising vital awareness – resulting in #Movember becoming a viral campaign.

2) Make All Content Unique, Funny Or Controversial.

It’s no secret people love a talking point, and in this day and age there’s no such thing as bad publicity. I want you to take a moment and think about the most controversial person of all time. Who did you come up with? Was it by any chance Princess Diana, Tony Blair or Donald Trump? Well one thing they all have in common is – they still have supporters and probably were never struggling for cash. The sad truth is controversy pays and any good marketer in this day and age understands this and uses it to their advantage. Unique and funny campaigns are also a sure thing in the marketing world, as this give popular platforms and the public an incentive to post the content on their platforms or share with their friends- resulting in free publicity

The human brain goes into ‘monkey mode’ when browsing social media or reading the daily newspaper, your brain is relaxed and seeking entertainment and literally latches onto any sort of unique, funny or controversial piece of content. I challenge you to observe the viral content posted online over the next few days (especially the newspaper) and try and figure out what category it falls into – unique, funny or controversial. Marketers have known this for years and design all news to keep readers locked in and make them feel like they’re receiving important news (some of it could be), but really it’s just monkey brain food and doesn’t impact the readers life in any tangible way but really designed to make a reader feel – emotion.

3) Read Your Comments!

Yes, you heard that right. So many business owners focus soo much time and energy on finalising sales, delivering a product or service or managing teams that they forget the most important part of their business – finding out why the customer who didn’t buy, didn’t buy – they usually leave a clue in the comments section embedded with a few hurtful words. And I bet you’re thinking something along the lines of ‘ my business is doing pretty well without reading peoples comments and I don’t see that as time well spent’ – I wan’t to be the one to tell you that the biggest companies in the world were started by entrepreneurs who spent countless hours reading their comments and made it their priority to understand the customers views and opinions. Don’t believe me? well –

  • Amazon didn’t ruin retail – Poor customer service and experience did
  • Air BnB didn’t ruin the hotel industry – Expensive costs and limited bookings did
  • Netflix didn’t kill blockbuster – Ridiculous late fees did
  • Apple didn’t kill the music industry – Having to buy full length albums did
  • Uber didn’t kill the taxi business – Limited access and fare control did

The solution to staying ahead of your competitors in your industry doesn’t lie within a 3 hour management meeting that costs you thousands to conduct and results in you increasing your marketing budget by 200% for the 4th time in a row- it actually comes from the frustrationthat @Lexii_365 experienced as a customer of your business and honestly posted under your latest Twitter post. I have notice Daniel Priestley and the team are always asking their clients for feedback and we discuss any customer complaints at team meeting every single week without fail, they understand it is the key to keeping current or potential customers happy and which is why I believe Dent will be the industry leaders for the years to come.

I now challenge you to spend an hour of your day reading comments about your business, or if you want to be really clever, your competitors – start to get in touch with your customers feelings, needs and wants and really begin to understand them. Also, speak to your customer service department and ask them what is consistently coming up as ‘negative feedback’ amongst your clients, I then want you to take that insight and make that the priority topicfor your next management meeting.

4) Aim To Go Viral With Every Piece Of Content.

Technology is the future of all businesses in every industry and social media is the future for marketing, this is something I believe in and if you don’t see this coming then chances are you’re a few years behind the rest of your respected industry. I want to share with you a quote I saw that has changed my prospective of social media altogether and has spurred me to create content relentlessly.

You are one piece of content away from changing your life

I want you to take a moment and try to think of a particular piece of content you put out in the past that was the starting domino or a major factor in taking either you or your business to the next level, this could be a book, an interview or just a Instagram post.

I now want you now to complete a little challenge – take the 3 tips I shared with you above and think about your next piece of content you want to share with the world in the hopes of going viral that will ultimately promote your business. Spend about 5 minutes planning this amazing piece of content that will change your life again. This content needs to aim to:

  • Win over the people who left a ‘negative’ feedback in your comments. for example if they commented that your custom jumpers were quite cheap so they just assumed it was low quality, then use wording such as ‘Luxury’ or ‘High Quality’.
  • Create something either funny, unique or controversial.
  • Most importantly it must give your customers or anyone online an incentive to re-post or take a picture with your brand embedded. (similar to Movember) or even that famous Starbucks coffee cup.

5) Champion Your Customers!

Great, now you understand your customers, what makes them buy your product, what puts them off your product/industry, what prompts them to post your content/brand on their personal social pages and you have even designed an amazing piece of content that could potentially go viral.

Now I want you to take a moment and think about who your best clients are and where they have came from, or should I say what clients were the easiest to convert into a sale? Wait. Let me guess – was it a referral? Well turns out people tend to trust their friends that they’ve know for the last 10 years over an annoying advertisement that followed them from YouTube to FaceBook for the last 10 years. This is why giving people an incentive to post your brand/product on their social page will have the best ROI and in certain circumstance it costs you absolutely nothing! so its just ‘R’ for Return, pure profit – in other words it didn’t cost you anything from the marketing budget! This is something that the industry will understand overtime but probably after they’ve wasted thousands of pounds on marketing – despite year after year of not getting the same results that they achieved at the start of their paid ads journey, unfortunately ads will just get more expensive.

Your companies biggest advocate is a happy client

Champion your customers at every single opportunity they will be the authentic proof that your business works (just make sure that customer doesn’t have an affiliate link).

5 Small business ideas

well this is a blog I have been looking forward to writing for some time. I have personally spent countless hours searching for my income stream to work towards, and have stumbled upon a few that are easy to start up but didn’t tickle my fancy. I will be sharing 5 small business ideas that can be set up with minimal funds, but with expediential profit potential. I know some of my readers are in a position of job security and don’t feel the need to set up anything but just ask yourself this… do you love your job? do you wake up every morning excited to make someone else money? well i do, but i still want to be able to focus some of my energy into creating my own streams of income.

1) Professional photographer

There will always be a need for a professional photographer, some of you will have a passion for photography and even might have studied it in education. This side business is so simple to setup and only requires a camera, here is one I recommend Canon EOS 1300D DSLR camera. The best way to get started on this is to offer out your services to friends and family, create social media platforms, create a logo and try and gain as much experience as possible.

This is considered a side hustle and will be done part time, only you can put a limit on how much you want to work. Start of by taking pictures for friends and work your way up to wedding events, corporate networking events and many more well paid jobs. My main tip in this field is take advantage of social media and network till your mouth becomes dry.

2) Waste management

There will always be a need for 2 services in this world we are living in, one is food and the other is waste management. I’m almost certain waste management isn’t anyone’s ‘passion’ unless you’re unblessed with OCD, but this is a great way to start up a small part-time business that can be started up with practically no money. There are also many ways you can go about this, one is buying a truck and start a waste collection business, another is to set up a cleaning company that attends after big events and do a clean up, there really is no limit.

I personally look at this business idea as a massive opportunity to create a continuous cash flow business. I personally would set up a events cleaning agency and hire contractors to attend events and do a clean up, whilst never actually picking up a broom myself. The waste management business will always be there and as I mentioned earlier there will always be a need for this service.

3) blogger/author

Being a blogger and author is only done by people that are passionate about writing, such as myself. There is no guaranteed payment from this service, but if you create a reputation and write about the right things it can become very lucrative, such as writing reviews can gain you some recognition from others. You should start off small, write blogs, comment on Facebook posts and just observe all bloggers and authors. This business is more about your connections rather than your talents, for example if you decide to have a book launch you want to get the right people there, the press etc. and you can’t do that if you don’t have links.

This type of business is very part time and will only get better with consistency. I’m personally writing blogs because I enjoy writing and I want to improve my grammar and typing skills, if i make any money out of this it will just be a bonus.

4) Catering

I’m sure you all saw this one coming referring back to the waste management paragraph. But yes, Catering will always be needed, until the day we die, making it one of the most profitable businesses you can start up. Once again there are many ways you can go about setting this up, but the cheapest way will be to sell your catering services from social media such as Instagram. One of the best things to sell would be a cake service and once again start of small, then work your way up to big events. This cash flow in this business is great because you will only cook on demand and can use ingredients that are in the cupboard of your house, and use your own oven. The best thing to do would be to make your service collection only so you don’t waste money or time delivering your products.

5) home made products

Selling home made products is an amazing side business to start up and will probably be your passion, such as making jewellery. With this business you want to really have a business plan so you avoid losing money, you’re going to need to work out the costs to produce your product, including post and packaging. I’m sure loads of you have a passion for creating products and there are many sites to sell your products on such as Etsy. This of course is a side business and a great way to begin being an entrepreneur and this can really go as far as you want to take it.

Side Hustle

I want to begin by saying this blog is inspired by Daniel Priestley’s book ‘Entrepreneur Revolution’ here is a link to his book. A few years ago he predicted that there is going to be a revolutionary time for new businesses to start, and you guessed it, the time has come.

Instagram, twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Gumtree… the list goes on, all of these are platforms you can use to sell products or services on, if you’re smart enough to see this opportunity. Never has there been a more efficient way to make money online! a few years back you had to be well connected to make money, or you had to hit the streets and sell, sell, sell. In this day and age almost everything is done online, making the potential for growth and exposure expediential.

As a 21 year old I’m personally witnessing many people my age taking the entrepreneur root, whether its a girl selling a eyelash application service, or a male doing a clothing line, and get this, they’re not quitting their day job. In 2018 there’s so many business ideas you can do to potentially make you thousands of pounds a month (I might share some ideas soon enough keep an eye out), and the beauty is most are done part time aka a side hustle. Don’t believe that because you have kids and in a secure job, that you don’t have time or energy to start a small business. The revolution is here and only the optimistic will survive, don’t miss out.

Personally I will exploring all avenues to make money via social media as I feel like it is still early days, and money is still available to be made, this doesn’t mean you can only make money via social media as a side hustle, social media is just easier to handle and everything can be done electronically. I have recently read a book called ‘Side Hustle: build a side business and make extra money – without quitting your day job’ it takes you through a 28 day plan, and potentially by the end of the 28 days you should have a functioning and viable idea.

Please let me know what you think about this, any likes or reposts will be highly appreciated, and if have somehow sparked you to start up a side hustle please let me know! Continue reading “Side Hustle”
